Famous For Saving People and Ships

The Newfoundland dog breed has a rich history of rescuing people and ships. In the Wikipedia entry on the breed, more than 63 rescues are mentioned. In 1815, a fisherman’s unnamed Newfoundland saved Napoleon Bonaparte from a stranded ship. Ann Harvey of Isle aux Morts, Quebec, rescued 180 Irish immigrants from the wrecked brig Dispatch.

During a blizzard, the SS Ethie sank off the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. Luckily, the dog was able to recover the rope and bring the survivors to shore. A breeches buoy attached to the rope was retrieved by the Newfoundland, and all 92 passengers were saved. The wreckage of the ship is visible in Gros Morne National Park.

Newfies

Newfies were originally introduced to the United States in the nineteenth century. They were popular in the 1870s in England and the U.K., and were recognized as a breed in 1879 by the American Kennel Club. They were used for water rescue and impromptu rescues, and became well known in the early 1900s in North America.
